Compensation for costs from an occupational injury

If you have costs for dental care, assistive devices, or medical care abroad due to an occupational injury, you can receive compensation from Försäkringskassan.

 

Can I receive compensation for dental care costs?

Yes, if

  • the treatment is necessary due to the injury
  • the dentist is affiliated with Försäkringskassan
  • you have a receipt or treatment proposal from your dentist
  • you are insured in Sweden. You are insured in Sweden if you work here.

If you meet all of these conditions, Försäkringskassan will go forward and investigate whether your injury or illness can be approved as an occupational injury. If it is approved as an occupational injury, you can receive compensation for dental care costs.

How do I apply?

2. Present receipts, invoices, quote or treatment proposal

We need documentation for your costs to be able to consider your application. You can either:

  • send in receipts or invoices that show how much you paid
  • or send in a proposal from a doctor or dentist regarding what treatment or assistive devices you need. Send it to Försäkringskassans inläsningscentral, 839 88 Östersund.

3. You receive a confirmation letter

Once we have received your application, we will send you a confirmation letter.

4. An administrator will contact you

An administrator will contact you when the investigation has been started.

5. You receive a decision

Our aim is for you to receive a decision within three months from the date the investigation begins. At present, we have long processing times. This means, it could take longer.

 

Can I receive compensation for assistive devices?

Yes, if

  • there is a doctor’s certificate or medical document indicating that you need the assistive device due to your occupational injury
  • you cannot receive the assistive device free of charge from the county council or the like
  • you have a receipt or a quote for your cost
  • you are insured in Sweden. You are insured in Sweden if you work here.

If you meet all of these conditions, Försäkringskassan will go forward and investigate whether your injury or illness can be approved as an occupational injury. If it is approved as an occupational injury, you can receive compensation for assistive devices.

Costs for medical care refers to costs for a doctor's care, hospital care, physical therapy, and travel to and from a doctor or hospital.

You can receive compensation for costs for medical care abroad if:

  • you had or will have a cost for medical care abroad due to your injury and you paid more for the care than you would have in Sweden.
  • you have a receipt or treatment proposal.
  • you are insured in Sweden. If you work here, you are.

If you meet all of these conditions, Försäkringskassan will go forward and investigate whether your injury or illness can be approved as an occupational injury. If it is approved as an occupational injury, you can receive compensation for dental care costs.

Even if you cannot receive compensation from Försäkringskassan, there may be other forms of compensation you can apply for.

  • If you are an employee, you may be entitled to compensation from AFA Försäkring. Ask your union or employer about this.
