Insured in Sweden

If you live or work in Sweden, you are usually covered by Swedish social insurance and may be entitled to one or more benefits from Försäkringskassan. When you apply for benefits, we first determine if you are insured in Sweden. We will then determine what benefits you are entitled to receive and how much you can receive.

If you have always lived in Sweden and have never worked in another country, you are insured here. However, if you have moved to or from Sweden, or work abroad, you may be insured for certain benefits, but not for all of them. You are not automatically insured in Sweden just because you are a Swedish citizen. What matters is where you live or work.

If you have worked in a country within the EU/EEA, in Switzerland, or in the United Kingdom, you may be covered by that country's social insurance. You cannot be covered by two countries' social insurance at the same time, we therefore sometimes need information about you from the other country in order to decide whether you should be insured in Sweden.

When you are abroad, different rules apply for compensation from Försäkringskassan. You need to be aware of these rules so you don't miss out on benefits, but also so you don't end up having to repay benefits.
