Should I report to Försäkringskassan that I am studying abroad?
Yes, you should report to Försäkringskassan that you are studying abroad. If you are not receiving student aid from Swedish Board of Student Finance (CSN), you must also submit a certificate stating that you are eligible for student aid for your education programme.

What happens after I have reported this?
Once you have reported it, we will investigate whether you will be insured in Sweden or in another country. Being insured in Sweden means, for example, that you are eligible for different forms of compensation from Försäkringskassan.
If you are studying outside of the EU/EEA or Switzerland, you are insured in Sweden as long as you are taking a study programme that makes you eligible for student finance from the Swedish Board of Student Finance (CSN). If you will be living in a different country and studying via a distance learning programme based in Sweden, you can only be insured in Sweden if you will be abroad for less than one year.
Working abroad
If you start working abroad, it may affect which country you are insured in and thereby which country you can receive compensation from, for example if you become ill.
Work outside of the EU/EEA or Switzerland
Am I entitled to care in Sweden?
No, you are normally not entitled to medical care in Sweden when you are studying and living outside of the EU/EEA or Switzerland and are no longer registered in the Swedish Population Register. If you are a Swedish citizen, you nonetheless have a right to emergency medical care in Sweden without having to pay the entire cost. In some cases, this also applies to planned medical care. Contact your county council for more information.
Do I have the right to receive medical care in the country where I am studying?
No, if you are studying in a country outside of the EU/EEA/Switzerland, you must pay the entire medical care cost that applies in that country. But, you may be entitled to certain forms of medical care if you are living and studying in one of the areas listed below for less than 1 year.
Algeria
If you are a Swedish citizen and live in Sweden, you have the right to emergency medical care in Algeria if you are staying there temporarily. You are responsible for paying the patient fee. You must present your Swedish passport and a certificate from Försäkringskassan (FK6392). Phone the Customer Centre at 0771-524 524 to request the certificate.
Australia
If you are studying in Australia, you are entitled to essential health care at the patient fee that applies there. But, you must first pay the entire medical care cost and then seek out Medicare in Australia for reimbursement of what you paid. Essential health care refers to medical care that cannot wait until you return to Sweden. You must present your Swedish passport or a certificate from Försäkringskassan (FK6393). Israel
If you are insured in Sweden, you are entitled to maternity care during delivery while temporarily staying in Israel. You are responsible for paying the patient fee that applies in Israel. You must present a certificate from Försäkringskassan (FK6394L). Phone the Customer Centre at 0771-524 524 to request the certificate.
Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey
If you are a resident of Sweden, you are entitled to immediate medical care on these islands if you are staying there temporarily. You are responsible for paying the patient fee that applies there. You must present your Swedish passport and a certificate from Försäkringskassan (FK6395). Phone the Customer Centre at 0771-524 524 to request the certificate.
Quebec
If you are a resident of Sweden, you are entitled to all medical care in Quebec while studying there. You are responsible for paying the patient fee that applies in Quebec. You must present a certificate with your work and study permits issued by the Ministry of Cultural Communities and Immigration to Quebec (Ministére des Communautés culturelles et de l’Immigration) and a certificate from Försäkringskassan (FK6351C).
