Moving abroad

Here you can read about what applies if you will be moving abroad and are not working or studying, for example if you are a pensioner.

When you move to another country, you are usually no longer eligible to be insured in Sweden. Among other things, this means that you cannot receive compensation from Försäkringskassan. You can only be insured in and receive compensation from a country within the EU/EEA or Switzerland. Contact the government authority in the country where you are insured to find out what forms of compensation you may be eligible for.

You are not necessarily insured in the same country as your family members. Everyone in the family should report the move abroad individually.

If you move within the EU/EEA or Switzerland and collect the Swedish national pension, you may be entitled to benefits such as medical care and dental care in Sweden. Bear in mind that an occupational pension is not the same as a national pension.

To receive care in the country you move to as well as medical and dental care in Sweden, you must apply for certificate E121 (S1) using My pages (Mina sidor).

What medical care can I get with the certificate?

Once your E121 (S1) certificate goes into effect, you are entitled to the care that is included in the public healthcare system in the country you moved to. You pay the standard patient fee that applies in that country. The care you are entitled to and the amount of the patient fee may differ greatly from what applies in Sweden. 

Once your certificate has been approved, we will send you a Swedish European Health Insurance Card (EU card). You use the EHIC to receive essential healthcare when you travel in EU/EEA countries or in Switzerland. The EHIC cannot be used when you need care in the country you moved to or in Sweden.

My partner does not have a pension. What applies to them?

If your spouse or registered partner moves with you and does not have a job or their own pension, they can apply for a “certificate on the right to care” giving them the right to the same care as you. They can apply on My pages (Mina sidor).

When you move to another country outside of the EU/EEA or Switzerland, you are usually no longer eligible to be insured in Sweden. Among other things, this means that you cannot receive compensation from Försäkringskassan and are not entitled to dental care in Sweden. You also lose your right to the European Health Insurance Card when you move.

You usually do not have the same right to medical care in Sweden either. Contact your county council for information on medical care.

 

Frequently asked questions

The healthcare provider in Spain sometimes requires you to present a certificate showing that you are a pensioner. Försäkringskassan issues the certificate in Spanish. Phone the Customer Centre at 0771-524 524 to request the certificate.

The European Health Insurance Card is automatically sent to the address we have registered as your residential address. Therefore remember to order the card well in advance of travelling.

Försäkringskassan can send a provisional paper certificate to another address. The certificate provides the same rights as the European Health Insurance Card. Phone the Customer Centre at 0771-524 524 if you need a provisional paper certificate.

You renew your European Health Insurance Card and your certificate on entitlement to health and medical care in Sweden by applying on My pages (Mina sidor).

You most often are not entitled to child allowance once you move abroad. Contact Försäkringskassan to learn what applies in your situation.

Yes, but first you have to apply for a certificate of E121 (S1) registration for health and medical care from Försäkringskassan. You apply on My pages (Mina sidor).

5435 Ansökan om intyg om rätt till vård eller EU-kort

Once your E121 enters into effect, you will receive a “certificate on entitlement to health and medical care in Sweden”. You must take it with and present it to your dentist or dental hygienist at your appointment.

If you get sick while travelling to the country you are moving to, you use your Swedish European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

If you get sick in the country you moved to before your certificate of registration for health and medical care is approved, you pay the entire cost yourself and can then apply for compensation from the authority in that country. Save your receipts and bear in mind that this only applies to general care and you cannot be reimbursed for the patient fee.

As long as you live in Sweden, you cannot get a certificate of registration for health and medical care. You are insured in Sweden until you move to the other country.

Even if the certificate is approved by the equivalent of Försäkringskassan after the move, the certificate is valid retroactively from the date you are registered in the other country.
