Housing supplement

Housing supplement is money you can receive in addition to activity compensation or sickness compensation if you have housing costs.

Am I eligible for housing supplement?

You are eligible for housing supplement if you:

  • live in Sweden
  • are receiving activity compensation or sickness compensation 
  • have a low income and housing costs
  • are not yet 65 years old If you are 65 years or older and are receiving full old age pension, you instead apply with the Swedish Pensions Agency.

You can also receive housing supplement if you live in Sweden and are receiving some form of disability benefit from another EEA country or Switzerland.

To learn whether you are eligible for housing supplement, you can call us at 0771-524 524. For us to be able to help you, we need information on your housing cost, income and savings. If you are married or have a live-in partner, we need this information for both of you. You should therefore have the information close at hand.

How much money will I get?

How much you can receive depends on how much you pay for your housing and the size of your income. If you are married or have a live-in partner, your spouse’s/partner's income also affects how much you can receive.

Calculate housing supplement (in Swedish)

 

If you are single, you can receive a maximum of SEK 5,220 per month. This corresponds to 96 per cent of the housing cost up to SEK 5,000 and 70 per cent of the housing cost between SEK 5,000 and 5,600.

 

 

If you are married or have a live-in partner, you can take credit for half of the housing cost. The highest acceptable housing cost is half of the level for a single person. You can receive a maximum of SEK 2,610 a month. This corresponds to 96 per cent of the housing cost up to SEK 2,500 and 70 per cent of the housing cost between SEK 2,500 and 2,800.

 

How do I apply for housing supplement?

1. Prepare digital documents about your housing

You need to attach copies of documents about your housing when you apply for housing supplement.

 

If you rent your home, you must send in copies of

  • your lease
  • your rent specification
  • NE appendix to your income tax return if you are self-employed
  • annual statement from your showing the balance of your account on 31 December of last year. This also applies if you have stock, mutual funds or endowment insurance.
  • Payment notice or payslip showing all of your current income.

If you do not already have the documents as files on your computer, you can take photos of them with your phone or scan them. 

If you cannot add the appendices when you submit your application, it is fine to submit them later. Try to do this as soon as possible.

   
 

 

If you live in a co-operative flat (tenant-owned housing) or own property, you must also send in copies of the following

  • purchase agreement or loan documents for the co-operative flat or property indicating the interest rate, debt and whether the residence has been put up as collateral for the loan
  • the latest service fee invoice (for co-operative flat)
  • any leasehold invoice (for property)
  • NE appendix to your income tax return if you are self-employed
  • annual statement from your showing the balance of your account on 31 December of last year. This also applies if you have stock, mutual funds or endowment insurance.
  • payment notice or payslip showing all of your current income.

Send in your appendices by standard post to Försäkringskassan inläsningscentral, 839 88 Östersund. Write your personal identity number on all documents you send in.

Swedish Pensions Agency (pensionsmyndigheten.se)

 

3. Disbursement

If you are already receiving activity compensation or sickness compensation, you will receive a decision on housing supplement within no more than 30 days. If we need more information from you or need to further investigate your case, we will contact you.

The money will be paid on the 18th of each month if you are born day 1–15 or the 19th of each month if you are born day 16–31. If the disbursement date is a Saturday, your money will be paid out on Friday. If the disbursement date is a Sunday, your money will be paid out on Monday.

When will the disbursement appear on My pages (Mina sidor)?

On My pages (Mina sidor), you can see the disbursement under Disbursements (Utbetalningar) 14 bank days before the money arrives.

Notify us if anything changes

It is important that you inform us if your income or living situation changes. Notify us as soon as possible, but within no more than 14 days. We can then make sure you receive the right amount of benefit. If you receive too much money, you may be obligated to pay money back later.

 

Report using My pages (Mina sidor) if

  • your rent changes
  • you have new home loan costs or a new leasehold fee
  • you have a change in income or wealth
  • you move
  • someone moves in or moves out of your home, like your child

You can include costs for

  • property tax
  • 70 per cent of interest expenses incurred with the house as collateral
  • 70 per cent of the site leasehold fee
  • fee for leased land
  • running and heating costs. These are calculated using standardised assessments which are based on statistical data.

You therefore do not need to send in your own bills for services such as heating with oil or electricity.

Since the size of the housing supplement depends on several factors, there are no set limits for how much money you can have in the bank. However, assets exceeding SEK 100,000 (if you live alone) or SEK 200,000 (if you live with a spouse or partner) will be taken into consideration in the calculation. The assets are calculated per the 31 December of the year before you receive housing supplement.

Examples of assets include:

  • private real estate or tenant-owned housing that is not your permanent residence
  • stock, mutual funds and other securities
  • cash and assets in bank accounts
  • endowment insurance
  • monetary claims.

Any debts in the form of, for example, bank loans or student loans are deducted from the assets. This does not apply to debts you have on your permanent residence.

No. The value of the home for which you are seeking housing supplement is not included as part of your assets.

Yes, you can apply for a period three months back in time. You can also receive housing supplement beginning from the same month you received sickness compensation or activity compensation.

If you apply for housing supplement for more than three months back in time, it is important that you send in the application no later than the month after Försäkringskassan made its decision about your sickness compensation or activity compensation.

If you are receiving activity compensation, you generally receive housing supplement for the same period that you have been granted activity compensation. If you are receiving sickness compensation, you generally receive housing supplement indefinitely.

No. If you live in a group home or service flat, you cannot include the cost of nursing and care when applying for housing supplement. You should only fill in the cost of the housing.

Yes, the housing cost is then calculated the same as a rental residence based on your sublease. 

No, you cannot receive housing supplement for electricity. If electricity is included in your housing cost, a deduction is made for the cost using a standard amount.

Different incomes are included at different amounts when calculating housing supplement. For example, the calculation applies 50% of work income and 80% of sickness benefit or unemployment benefits.

  No, you do not need to report it. Försäkringskassan retrieves this information from the Swedish Tax Agency each year.
