Activity compensation for reduced working ability
Activity compensation is compensation paid to individuals who are under the age of 30 and are not able to work full time due to illness, injury or disability.
Am I eligible for activity compensation?
You are eligible for activity compensation if you:
- cannot work full time in any job on the labour market for at least one year due to illness, injury or disability.
- are insured in Sweden and were insured at the time you became sick. You are insured in Sweden if you live or work here.
You may be entitled to activity compensation even if you move to or live in another country if you lived or worked in Sweden previously. Contact the Customer Centre at 0771-524 524 if you live in another country and want to know what applies for you.
You can receive activity compensation beginning the July of the year you turn 19 years of age up to the month before you turn 30. The compensation can be granted for 1 to 3 years depending on how long you will be unable to work. Depending on how much your work capacity is diminished, you may have full, three-quarters, one-half or one-quarter activity compensation.
How much do I get?
The amount you receive in activity compensation depends on what income you had in the past.
If you have not worked previously or have had low income, you receive guarantee benefit. How much you can receive in guarantee benefit depends on your age and how long you have lived in Sweden.
If you are:
- at least 19 years old but have not yet turned 21, you receive SEK 8,790 before tax per month
- at least 21 years old but have not yet turned 23, you receive SEK 8,987 before tax per month
- at least 23 years old but have not yet turned 25, you receive SEK 9,184 before tax per month
- at least 25 years old but have not yet turned 27, you receive SEK 9,381 before tax per month
- at least 27 years old but have not yet turned 29, you receive SEK 9,578 before tax per month
- at least 29 years old but have not yet turned 30, you receive SEK 9,775 before tax per month
Bear in mind that you may have other insurance coverage
If you receive activity compensation, you may possibly receive money from insurance coverage you have through your job or union. Ask them what applies for you.
How do I apply?
1. Apply on My pages (Mina sidor)
2. Send in a doctor's statement
Send in a doctor's statement that describes your illness or disability to Försäkringskassans inläsningscentral, 839 88 Östersund.
It is usually the doctor you normally see who describes your medical status in a statement. But, Försäkringskassan may also request that another doctor or medical expert examine you and assess your capacity to work.
3. You are assigned a personal administrator
Once we have received your application, you will be assigned a personal administrator. He or she will contact you within a week. You will then be told if any additional documents or information is needed. You will also arrange a time when you can meet and go through your application together. In some cases, this can be done by phone.
If you gave another person power of attorney to handle your case, the administrator may need to meet with you anyway. If this is the case, you and your representative can come together.
4. You receive a decision
You will receive your decision within about 4 months of the date you applied. Your personal administrator can tell you more.
Activity compensation is paid out on the 18th or 19th of every month.
- If the disbursement date is a Saturday, you receive the activity compensation on Friday.
- If the disbursement date is a Sunday, holiday or Midsummer Eve, you will paid your compensation the next weekday.
- If you live abroad, your activity compensation is sent from Sweden on the disbursement date.
You may be entitled to additional forms of compensation
If you receive activity compensation, you may be entitled to housing supplement.
You will receive a benefits certificate
When you have been granted activity compensation, we will send you a benefits certificate together with the decision. With the benefits certificate, you can get discounts from certain companies. The companies themselves decide whether they will give a discount, so we have no knowledge as to which companies give discounts.
If you need a new benefits certificate, please call your personal administrator and request that we send one to you.
What can I do while receiving activity compensation?
Plan for work or studies
While you are receiving activity compensation, you and your administrator at Försäkringskassan will work together to plan how you can begin working or studying. Examples of this include different forms of rehabilitation that can help you feel better and get closer to joining the labour market. If you are required to participate in occupational rehabilitation, you are obliged to participate based on your ability.
You can participate in activities
While you are receiving activity compensation, you can participate in different activities that can support your development and have a positive impact on your illness or disability. Försäkringskassan can provide compensation for some of the costs you have for your activities. Participating in activities is voluntary. You will not lose your compensation if you decide against participating in any activities. Your activities must not hinder or replace occupational rehabilitation.
You can work or study with activity compensation
If you want to start working or start working more, you must call your personal administrator. You will work together to plan how you can start working. You always benefit from working and your personal administrator will help you so you receive the right compensation.
Together with the Public Employment Service (Arbetsförmedlingen), we can help you:
- find a workplace where you can test out working, what we refer to as work training
- get support in applying for jobs
- participate in initiatives that can prepare you to rejoin the workforce, such as wellness care and study visits.
Work less than 5 hours a week
You can work just a little, for example doing political or volunteer work, and still retain your entire activity compensation. This applies if you
- have full activity compensation
- work less than 5 hours a week
- earn no more than one-eighth of the normal income for the work you are doing.
You must report this to us before you begin. Call your personal administrator.
Who arranges work?
You can arrange work on your own or you can ask for assistance from the Public Employment Service. If you are receiving 75 per cent activity compensation and want to work more, contact your personal administrator. He/she will contact the Public Employment Service, which should be able to offer you work within 6 months.
Test out working with dormant activity compensation
Once you have been receiving activity compensation for at least one year, you can try working and have your compensation set to dormant status. This means that you retain your right to activity compensation if you were to become sick again. During the time period you are working, you will also receive a tax-free amount equal to 25 per cent of the dormant compensation. You can have dormant activity compensation for a maximum of two years. You must apply for dormant compensation before you begin working.
If you need to stop working, contact your personal administrator. You can then begin receiving the compensation again without having to apply.

You can test out studying for six months
Once you have been receiving activity compensation for at least one year, you can keep the compensation if you want to test out studying for a maximum of six months. You must apply before you begin studying. Your personal administrator can tell you more. You apply on My pages (Mina sidor).
If you cannot apply via My pages (Mina sidor), you can apply using the form.
Studying with dormant activity compensation
Once you have been receiving activity compensation for at least one year, you can have it set to dormant status while you study. This means that it is not paid out, but you retain your right to activity compensation if you were to become sick again.
While you are studying, your entire compensation is set to dormant status, regardless of whether you are studying full time or part time. Your activity compensation can be dormant for a maximum of two years. If you were allowed to keep your activity compensation while testing out studying, the dormant period could be shorter. While you are a student, you can apply for student aid or another type of financial aid from CSN.
You must apply before you begin studying. Your personal administrator can tell you more.
If you need to end your studies, contact your personal administrator. You can then begin receiving your compensation again without having to apply.
If you cannot apply via My pages (Mina sidor), you can apply using the form.
Call us if anything changes
If you are receiving activity compensation, you must call us and let us know if you
- begin working or studying
- begin working at a greater scope than before, for example if you receive one-half compensation but begin working full time.
- receive a new or modified foreign pension, annuity, or the like
- move abroad.
- are given an additional volunteer task or the task changes in scope
- you continue working after your decision on dormant activity compensation has expired
- your work capacity improves, even if you do not work
Changes related to how much you work must be reported in advance. Other changes must be reported as soon as you find out about them. If you do not report changes, you may be obliged to pay back money if you received too much or should not have been receiving compensation.
