Parental benefit before the child is born

Parental benefits are money you receive to be able to be at home with your child instead of working, seeking work or studying. But you can take out parental benefits even before the child is born to prepare for the child's arrival.

Can I receive parental benefit before the child is born?

If you are pregnant, you can begin taking out parental benefit 60 days before your estimated due date.

Both parents can also be on leave with parental benefit to participate in parental training before the child is born. This also applies to prenatal care visits for the period 60 days before the estimated due date up until the date of delivery.

You can receive parental benefit if you or your partner is expecting a child and you are insured in Sweden. You are normally insured in Sweden if you live or work here.

How do I register and apply for parental benefits before the child is born?

You must first register that you will be on leave and then apply for the benefit.

1. Register

You can register whenever you want, but not later than the same day for which you want compensation.

  1. Send in your pregnancy certificate.
    It serves as your registration and you can apply for parental benefits in the next step. Send the certificate to Försäkringskassans inläsningscentral 839 88 Östersund.
  2. Register your income
     To be able to calculate your parental benefits, we need your income information. Ask your employer to submit your income information via the Employer Service. Your employer must use code “5033”.   3. Approve the information
    Then log in to My pages (Mina sidor) and approve the information your employer provided.

If your employer is not connected to the Employer Service or if you cannot use My pages (Mina sidor), you can instead call our Customer Centre at 0771-524 524 and request a form.

2. Apply on My pages (Mina sidor)

Log in to My pages (Mina sidor) to plan your days and apply for parental benefit.

3. Disbursement

If your application is complete, the money is disbursed within 30 days. Otherwise, we will contact you within one week. The money will arrive on the 25th of every month.

As soon as we have processed your application, you can see your preliminary disbursements under Disbursements (Utbetalningar) on My pages (Mina sidor).  The actual disbursement will be shown 1 bank day before the money arrives.

  • If the disbursement date is a Saturday, your money will be paid out on Friday.  
  • If the disbursement date is a Sunday, your money will be paid out on Monday.
  • Disbursement normally scheduled for 25 December will be paid out on 21 December 2018.
 

If you want to change your application

You can change an application submitted on My pages (Mina sidor) as long as the money has not been paid out. If you make your change no later than the 15th of the month, you will receive the right amount at the next disbursement.

No, not if there is six months or less until the planned delivery. Your parental benefits are calculated on the income you had before you decreased your working hours.

No, not if you notify your employer at least two months in advance. By law, you have the right to be on parental leave when you take out parental benefits. When you notify your employer that you will be on parental leave, you must also say how long you plan to be on leave. At some workplaces, there may be collective bargaining agreements with different rules so it may be good to speak with the labour union and the employer to find out what applies.

Yes, anyone who is pregnant   can transfer some of her parental leave days to you. It is easiest to do this on My Pages.
