Housing allowance for families with children

Am I eligible for housing allowance?

You can easily find out whether you can receive housing allowance by using the “Kassakollen” function. You can receive housing allowance regardless of whether you own or rent your home.

You can receive housing allowance for families with children if

  • you have a child/children living with you
  • you pay more than SEK 1,400 a month for your housing
  • you live and are registered at the address you are seeking allowance for.

Exceptions from the registration requirement can be made if special circumstances exist. Such exceptions are:

  • If you are living in the residence less than one year. Then, you will not normally be registered there, but may nonetheless be eligible to housing allowance.
  • If you are at risk of being a victim of crime, stalking or serious harassment and are therefore allowed to remain registered at your old address (referred to as “kvarskrivning” in Swedish).

  • your income
  • the number of children living in your home
  • what your housing costs
  • the size of your residence

How do I apply for housing allowance?

1. Prepare digital documents about your housing

You will need to attach copies of documents about your housing when you apply for housing allowance.

  • your latest rent specification
  • your lease - if it is the first time you are applying for housing allowance for this home.

If you do not already have the documents as files on your computer, you can take photos of them with your phone or scan them.  

If you cannot add the appendices when you submit your application, it is fine to submit them later. Remember to do this as soon as possible, but within no more than 30 days after submitting your application.

  
  • your latest association fee specification
  • your transfer agreement - if it is the first time you are applying for housing allowance for this home
  • papers that show that the tenant-owner's right is mortgaged, if you have loans on your tenant-owner's right
  • your most recent loan specification with the current debt and interest rate, if you have loans on the co-operative flat.

  • papers that show that the house is mortgaged, if you have loans on the house
  • your most recent loan specification with the current debt and interest rate, if you have loans on the house
  • papers that show what your site leasehold costs - if you have a site leasehold.

If you cannot add the appendices when you submit your application, it is fine to submit them later. Remember to do this as soon as possible, but within no more than 30 days after submitting your application.

2. Gather information about your income

Several different types of income are included when you apply for housing allowance. You will find a lot of the information you need in your latest tax return.

  • income from employment, e.g. salary and taxable benefits such as parental benefit, childcare allowance, sickness benefit, sickness compensation, activity compensation, and pension
  • income from business activities
  • some foreign income
  • student aid in the form of study grants and study start aid
  • tax-exempt scholarships
  • carer's allowance
  • introduction benefit
  • your assets, e.g. private real estate, securities such as shares or cash in bank accounts that together exceed SEK 25,000
  • the assets of any child living at home
  • half of the assets of any child with alternating residence
  • investment income, such as interest on bank accounts and bonds, capital gains, and dividends from shares and mutual funds. If you have a child living in your home either full time or alternatingly, their investment income is usually included as well. 
 

3. Apply for housing allowance

Log in to My pages (My pages) to apply for housing allowance. Once you have logged in to My pages (Mina sidor), you can be connected to an administrator from the Customer Centre in a web meeting and get help filling out the application.

If you cannot or do not want to apply via My pages (Mina sidor), you can apply using the form.

If you have a cohabiting partner or a child over age 18 who lives with you, you cannot apply via My pages (Mina sidor). Apply using the form.

Even if you apply using the form, you can send in your appendices digitally if you wish. Log in to My pages (Mina sidor) to attach your copies digitally.

 

4. Disbursement

If your application is complete, you will receive a decision within no more than 30 days. If any information is missing, we will contact you.

The money is paid out in arrears on the 27th of each month.

If the disbursement date is a Saturday or Sunday, your money will be paid out on Friday.

When will the disbursement appear on My pages (Mina sidor)?

On My pages (Mina sidor), you can see the disbursement under Disbursements (Utbetalningar) 5 bank days before the money arrives.

5. Notify us if anything changes

It is important that you notify us if your income or your housing situation changes, for example if you stop studying and start working and thereby have a higher income. We can then make sure you receive the right amount of benefit. If you receive too much money, you may be obligated to pay money back later.

If you are earning more than you thought you would

Change your housing allowance on My pages (Mina sidor) or call the Customer Centre at 0771-524 524 and let us know.

If you are earning less than you thought you would

Change your housing allowance on My pages (Mina sidor).

If you move

Submit a new application for the new address.

Other changes

On My pages (Mina sidor), you can inform us if

  • you receive more income that is not salary
  • your rent or monthly fee has changed
  • someone moves in with you
  • any of your children moves away from home.

If you cannot or do not want to apply via My pages (Mina sidor), you can apply using the form. The form can be found at the bottom of the page.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. You are eligible for housing allowance if

  • the child lives with you at least 30 days per year
  • you live in a residence that is at least 40 square metres
  • the residence has at least two rooms and a kitchen

No. You cannot receive allowance for time before you applied. There is one exception to this. If you had a retroactive rent increase, you can receive allowance for previous months.

This is possible in certain cases. For example, if you are temporarily living at another address for less than a year and then will move back to your registered address.  This also applies if you are allowed to remain registered at your old address (referred to as “kvarskrivning” in Swedish).

Yes. If you have a sublease that has been approved by the landlord or tenant-owner's association, you can apply for housing allowance.

No. If you rent part of someone else's home, you cannot receive the allowance for your housing expenses if the person who owns the residence or possesses it as a rental flat or co-operative flat also lives there permanently or on occasion.

However, as a lodger with children you are entitled to the special allowance for child living at home.

When you applied for housing allowance, you provided preliminary information on the income you thought you would receive during the year in question. Around the end of each year, we perform a final calculation of the housing allowance, where we compare your preliminary income information with the information from your tax return, which we receive from the Swedish Tax Agency.

If you received too little in housing allowance, you will receive a supplemental disbursement. Supplemental disbursement is paid out in February. You do not have to do anything to receive the disbursement. It is deposited in the same account as that used for the housing allowance.

If you are connected to the service My messages (Mina meddelanden) will your decision letter be sent to your digital mailbox instead of to your home with paper mail.

About My messages (Mina meddelanden)

No, you can only receive the allowance for part of your housing cost? This part is called the allowance qualifying housing cost.

There is an upper limit for what housing cost is considered allowance qualifying. For families with children, the limit is based on the number of children living in the home.

The limit can be reduced, for example, if the size of your residence (in square metres) exceeds a certain limit, if you rent out one or more rooms or if anyone other than your spouse, live-in partner or children lives with you.

Yes. If you received too much money, you can pay back the excess in advance. If you pay back the difference before 30 September of the year after you received the allowance, you will not be charged any fee.
