Here you will find information about parental benefit, temporary benefit for care of a sick child (VAB), and how to protect your sickness benefit qualifying income (SGI) if you become unemployed while on parental leave.
If you are expecting a child
If you are unemployed and are expecting a child, you can receive parental benefit once the child is born. The rules are the same as if you had a job. The only difference is how your compensation is calculated.
If you had a job before becoming unemployed, you can receive parental benefit based on the income you had then. This is referred to sickness benefit qualifying income.
To receive compensation based on your sickness benefit qualifying income, you must have registered with the Public Employment Service the first day you were unemployed and remain registered.
If you worked 6 months or more before you became unemployed, it is sufficient if you registered with the Public Employment Service within three months after you became unemployed.
If you did not have a job before becoming unemployed, you cannot receive parental benefit based on your income. You instead receive SEK 225 in parental benefit for days at the sickness benefit level.
Furthermore, you cannot receive e.g. pregnancy benefit or compensation for 10 days upon the birth of the child. This is because you are not losing any income.
If you are on parental leave
If you are receiving parental benefit and you have become or will become unemployed, you must contact us and let us know.
It is important to protect your sickness benefit qualifying income
If you child is younger than 1 year old, your sickness benefit qualifying income remains protected until the child's first birthday. This means that you will receive the same amount in parental benefit and benefit for care of a sick child as previously. Beginning from the child’s 1st birthday, you sickness benefit qualifying income is protected if you:
- register at the Public Employment Service no later than your child's first birthday
- beginning from your child's first birthday take full parental benefit at least 5 days per week.
If you take less parental benefit or stop taking it completely, you must register at the Public Employment Service to retain your previous sickness benefit qualifying income. This must be done the same day.
If you are caring for a sick child
If you are receiving unemployment benefits, you are entitled to temporary parental benefit when you care for a sick child.
