Sickness benefit

Sickness reporting by the unemployed

Those who are unemployed may be entitled to sickness benefit from the very start of the sickness period. You should submit a sickness report on the first day of your illness via Försäkringskassan's self-service platform. Here you can also indicate the extent to which you cannot work due to illness.

When can a person receive sickness benefit?

Those unable to work due to illness may receive sickness benefit at the normal level of 80 per cent of the sickness benefit qualifying income. Sickness benefit at the normal level is paid for no more than 364 days during the timeframe of 450 days.

You can thereafter apply for sickness benefit at the continuation level of 75 per cent of the sickness benefit qualifying income for up to 550 days.

Those suffering from a serious illness may apply for more days with sickness benefit at the normal level, even after the 364-day limit has passed..

Those receiving sickness benefit at the continuation level for the maximum number of days may, in exceptional cases, receive additional days of sickness benefit at the continuation level after the 550-day limit has passed. This applies, for example, to those who are hospitalised or receiving extensive care without being admitted to hospital. It also applies to people who risk further deterioration in health if they work or participate in a labour market programme
